Alert: HTML5 video or audio

HTML5 audio or video icon. An "audio or video" alert means an audio or video file is present in Canvas. Videos require equivalent and accurate captions, as well as a time-based transcript. Captions are a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information in a media file. A transcript is a written version of speech from an audio or video file. While captions and transcripts are essential for people with hearing impairments, they also benefit other users, such as those learning a language or those in areas where audio is not accessible.

Note: Currently, Pope Tech does not scan HTML5 video or audio for captions or a transcript. However, Pope Tech will alert you to the presence of audio or video files, allowing you to manually check for accessibility. As of Spring 2025, Pope Tech released a new caption detection feature for YouTube and Canvas Studio videos. Refer to any of the YouTube error or alert pages in this module for more information.

Important: If you access this alert using the Accessibility Dashboard, skip to Step 3.

Click the edit button to open Canvas’s Rich Content Editor.
Click the Pope Tech Accessibility Guide button at the bottom of your screen.
Navigate to "Documents and Videos" in the Accessibility Guide.
Select a result to highlight the audio or video file in your content.
Check for a transcript for audio content and captions and a transcript for video content.
1. Captioning through Kaltura: For help adding captions in Kaltura, refer to the Guide to Captioning Videos.
2. Captioning with Video Options: If you already have an SRT file (an SRT file is a plain text file format used to display closed captions or subtitles), you can add it to your video directly in Canvas.
  1. Right-click on the video and select "Video Options."
  2. Under "Closed Captions/Subtitles," select "English" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Upload your SRT caption file using the "Choose caption file" button.
  4. Select "Done." "Save" or "Save and Publish" your page with the embedded video.
Manually confirm the accessibility of each audio or video file.
