Error: YouTube video missing captions

YouTube video missing captions icon. A "YouTube video missing captions" error indicates that a YouTube video lacks a caption track. All multimedia, including videos, must have equivalent content for different needs, which users can achieve through captions. Captions are a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information in a media file. A transcript is a written version of speech from an audio or video file. While captions and transcripts are essential for people with hearing impairments, they also benefit other users, such as those learning a language or those in areas where audio is not accessible.

Important: If you access this alert using the Accessibility Dashboard, skip to Step 3.

Click the edit button to open Canvas’s Rich Content Editor.
Click the Pope Tech Accessibility Guide button at the bottom of your screen.
Navigate to "Documents and Videos" in the Accessibility Guide.
Click the down arrow next to "YouTube video missing captions."
Use the "Select a result" section to identify all YouTube videos missing captions.

If you own the YouTube video:

Follow the steps outlined in the Guide to Captioning Original YouTube Videos.
- If using YouTube's automated captions, edit them with appropriate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Automatic captions almost always lack these features, which are essential for usability and accessibility.
- To download a transcript, hover over “Published,” select the three dots, and click “Download.” Choose the file type that works best. We recommend using the .srt file type.

If you do not own the YouTube video:

Upload the video to the Kaltura Media Gallery or My Media.
Follow the steps outlined in the Guide to Captioning Public YouTube Videos.
- If using Kaltura's manual captions, edit them with appropriate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Automatic captions almost always lack these features, which are essential for usability and accessibility.
- To download a .srt file-type transcript:
  - Click "Actions" and select "Edit."
  - Navigate to "Captions" on the menu bar.
  - Select the download button to begin an automatic download.
